The Great Escape
Prelude to a Sabbatical
It's 4:43am and I'm in the Radisson in New Dehli, delayed on my way to Kathmandu and unable to sleep. Keeping me sane is this comforting mug of English Breakfast whose tea bag I'm having to split amongst two mugs in an effort to prolong its life as they've only supplied one. I'm tired, jet-lagged and not dealing well with the humidity.
But I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's rewind a few months to April 2014, where this all started. My sabbatical or what I'm calling The Great Escape: my big year off after eight in the world of High Finance and nine away from Canada. A near decade-long experience where I count myself amongst the fortunate few to have seen and done as many things as I have. And yet, as they say, all good things must come to an end.
It was a realization of something that had been percolating deep within for some time. How long I cannot say, but it all came to a head in the stillness of the Namib desert (clichéd yes, but utterly true). A eureka moment where all my crowding thoughts and emotions finally made sense: I needed a change.
And so here I am, on a journey I'm so often told is once in a life-time. This is my blog where I'll be sharing my thoughts, musings, experiences, photographs and whatever else tickles my fancy. It will be updated whenever I have something to share, internet access permitting.
Please leave comments if you're so inclined (this blog uses Disqus) but not on Facebook as I'm not big on it. You can also follow me on Instagram at kevin_nkc where I share things that are more "of the moment" but not "blog worthy".
Experiencing the world and loving every second of it.
